Sam chats about: the difference between mentoring, advising, and coaching; finding joy in aging; and the leadership superpower of being present with others. Laurie Sherman is Sam's friend and colleague.

Laurie's bio: To my executive coaching and consulting practice, I bring 30 years of management and leadership experience across multiple sectors and industries, from running organizations to serving as senior advisor to Boston’s longest-serving Mayor. Two of my greatest professional joys are 1-1 business coaching for leaders eager to deepen their impact, and designing and facilitating retreats for senior teams keen to become higher-functioning, more inclusive, and more innovative. My recent book – Chasing Social Justice: How Do We Advance the Work that Matters Most? – lays out leadership lessons learned across sectors, initiatives, and movements. I am fortunate to have access to the best thought leaders in the field of coaching and consulting. I was trained by (and continuously engage in professional development with) the Berkeley Executive Coaching Institute, with colleagues sharing resources from around the world, including India, Netherlands, U.S., South Africa, Germany, Turkey, Ireland, and Canada. As an athlete, professional, and parent of three young adults (in other words a consummate multi-tasker!), I excel at assisting my clients in finding balance as they maximize impact.

Sam is honored to publish this episode in anticipation of the Berkeley Executive Coaching Institute Coaches Conference this November. Laurie and he will both serve as presenters among an unprecedented number of presentations aimed at helping alumni give their best to their clients. This interview series is intended to provide context for each presentation topic and share the good that BECI creates through their alumni. Sam has also been releasing clips of these episodes. Connect with Sam and follow as you'll likely see some familiar faces soon!
